Dark Glass vs. Plastic Squeeze Bottles vs. Clear Glass: How Packaging Ruins (or Saves) Your Oil

Squeeze bottles are trendy and convenient on the stove, while clear glass bottles look pretty on the shelf. Here is how long your olive oil actually survives in each container.

Olive Oil's Two Biggest Enemies: Light and Oxygen

Unlike wine, olive oil never improves in the bottle. From the day the olives are crushed, two forces slowly drain its flavor and health benefits: UV light and oxygen.

1. Ceramic & Tin Cans (Best Protection: 24+ Months) Opaque ceramic bottles (like **Frantoio Muraglia** and **Brightland**) and coated tins block **100% of light**. Keep them away from a hot stove and they stay vibrant for up to two years.

2. Dark Antique Green & Amber Glass (Gold Standard: 18–24 Months) Dark glass blocks over 90% of damaging supermarket light wavelengths while remaining completely inert and non-porous.

3. Opaque Plastic Squeeze Bottles (Great If You Use It Fast: 6–12 Months) Modern opaque PET squeeze bottles (like **Graza**) block light well and make cooking fun, though plastic slowly allows microscopic oxygen transfer over many months. Buy them if you cook daily and finish a bottle within 6–8 weeks!

4. Clear Glass (The Automatic Red Flag) Never buy extra virgin olive oil in clear flint glass. Store aisle lights begin oxidizing the oil within days of shelving.
